John Vlismas is well known for his outspoken and observational humour. His ability to understand and comment on political, social and economic affairs has earned him a broad and growing corporate client base, as well as invitations to perform in England, Germany, Canada, Ireland, Australia, Botswana, Namibia and Zimbabwe.
John is perhaps a cult figure, taking his particular brand of original, intellectual and wildly risky comedy into everything he does, whether it is clean, complex corporate appearances with highly tailored material, the no-holds-barred material that ignites his public appearances, or the thought through outrage he often presents on radio to provoke robust debate.
He holds the rare distinction of being the only South African stand-up comic to have performed at The Royal Albert Hall, The Hammersmith Apollo, The Lyric Theatre - Shaftesbury lane and The Best of The Fest showcases in both the Montreal and Melbourne Comedy Festivals. He has shared a line-up with Drew Carey, written dialogue for Jerry Springer, and hosted Chris Rock at his club.
John won the first ever “Stand Up Of The Year Award” at the South African Comedy Awards in 2007, and went on to co-found the Comic’s Choice Awards in 2011.
He has written professionally for print, television, stage and radio and has appeared in and co-produced several South African Films. He has worked as a television and radio presenter, and recently agreed to perform Shakespeare at the Zoo. He is proud to be one of the Comics asked to perform for the 46664 “It’s No Joke” series of concert shows, and will be appearing in the Bafunny Bafunny 2011 Arena Tour shortly.
Few people know that John is also a qualified scuba diving instructor.
Wherever he performs during the rest of the week, be it an arena or a conference, you can almost always find him on Sunday nights at the Comedy Underground – the club night he began in Melville Johannesburg, where the beer is still warm and the ticket price has not changed in ten years.

Five years ago, Vlismas met Professor Jonathan Foster-Pedley, then a lecturer at the Graduate school of Business in Cape Town, now Dean of Henley Business School, JHB. An academic friendship was the result, and Foster-Pedley asked Vlismas to prepare a lecture for MBA students.
The SharedWorld is the result. A dynamic one hour presentation that begins with the question: “How can a lone human being stand in front of a massive sample of strangers and sense their requirement?”
Apply this question to your marketing team, your leaders, or your front-facing ground-level staff. Is it possible that 13 years as a top-touring comic, across several countries, could result in a possible answer? Vlismas has performed for over 600 000 people live, in ten countries… would you accept that as the basis of a detailed analysis?
What began as a private quest to educate himself has transformed into a fresh, compelling and articulate argument for lateral thinking, in terms any audience can understand.
Microsoft, South African Breweries and RMB, as well as several smaller, younger companies have already booked and enjoyed this explosive opportunity to see your environment from a fresh angle, complete with five simple points to take home that will enhance your ability to gather information, enhance judgement and provide rich solutions quickly.
